Fall in New England

Yesterday we had the most wonderful afternoon. We spent several hours at the DeCordova outdoor sculpture park perusing the very cool works of art, with a perfect array of changing fall leaves as the backdrop. It was one of those bittersweet moments for me - sooo happy to be here for one more gorgeous Fall season in New England, trying to absorb every moment of this perfect afternoon since it's also our last autumn in Boston. The DeCordova is one place that Jeff admits he will miss. It's our "happy place"...

I can't believe our little Sawyer is almost 3 weeks old! It is incredible how time flies. Tonight I spent some time in the studio with my family and the baby. They leave in a few days, and we won't see them again until spring :( There are sooo many photos from tonight that I am dying to edit, but since my eyes are burning from sleepiness with our newborn schedule, I only have one to post. Many more to come though...

We are soooo in love with our new baby! Sawyer McKean arrived 10 days early on September 19, and we are so lucky to have this precious bundle in our family. Oliver and Emma are a the proudest big brother and big sister, and Sawyer is a complete joy. Jeff and I consider ourselves so incredibly blessed to have welcomed another healthy, beautiful baby into our lives. It is truly a gift, and one that we are extremely grateful for.

I've had a lot of fun over the last couple of days getting my studio set up again after 4 months away from home! I couldn't wait to round up the kids (and bribe them with lollipops:) to test out the new lights. With Facebook, Linked-In and so many online avenues to market ones self, head-shots are no longer just for actors. They're for Lawyers too! I know, more self indulgence... I guess I am just so excited to have a nice variety of maternity photos, since I seriously have none from my pregnancies with Ollie and Em. I am also soooo proud of my hubby for his patience (with his demanding photographer wife:) and his complete and total willingness to help me take pics. Again, taken at Albion Basin - the same evening I took Becky's photos. Such an amazing location, just too bad every photographer in Utah knows about this area too. I suppose such splendor cannot remain a secret:)

Albion Basin

This afternoon was wonderful. At the suggestion of my brother in law Chris, we took the kids on a drive to Albion Basin up Little Cottonwood Canyon. The views were incredible, and with the wildflowers in full bloom it was just amazing. I have to admit that I am falling in love with the Utah landscape. It's a photographers dream! I have definite plans to return at least once this week with a more serious photographic agenda:) Here's one photo that I love that I just had to post...

The Salt Flats

I have been doing a lot of research and brainstorming lately on some cool locations around the beautiful Salt Lake area for my *big* maternity shoot. My belly is looking quite round lately, and I have been dying to check out the notorious Salt Flats, so we got up bright and early this morning, and headed West... I apologize since this post is rather self indulgent, since I'm the subject, but I'm so pleased with the result that I have to post some of the photos. I couldn't have taken the photos without the help of my wonderful hubby! He was so patient as I set up the shots, showed him how/where to focus my camera etc... Taking photographs of young, restless children can be a challenge at times... but WOW taking photos of your OWN restless children is even more challenging! (They just listen better to anyone other than Mom at times - sad but true.) I have been fairly busy with sessions since arriving *home* to BC a couple of weeks ago, and can't believe we're leaving in a few short days. However, I didn't want to miss the chance to photograph my babes in my gorgeous home and native land! We haven't even packed our things yet, and I'm already homesick for this beautiful, beautiful country. It's truly a photographers dream:)

I was lucky enough to photograph the very beautiful London this evening. She will be turning one in a couple of weeks, and I had forgotten how active children are at this age! Boy, I got a workout - as did her parents:) It turns out that a 7 1/2 month pregnant belly has slowed down my reflexes a little when trying to keep up with a fast little girl! First, I want to apologize for the over-saturation of photos of my kids on this blog lately! We are away from Boston for the summer, currently in Texas where we really don't know anyone, so this has been an excuse for me to take tons of photos of my favorite two subjects. In a few weeks we will be heading to Utah (and a trip to B.C) for the final 2 months of summer break, where I have a bunch of sessions scheduled - making for some fun blogging variety:)

Now about today... My daughter has been going through some serious "terrible two's"! I honestly can't remember a day in the recent past where she hasn't had some kind of serious meltdown/tantrum. Fun times. Thanks to my son's favorite show "Sid the Science Kid" we were inspired to make some "charts". We made a chart for "being a good listener" where the kids get to put stickers up every time they do a really a really great job of listening. Let's just say that Sid is a genius! Emma is super into it, and this is the first day I can remember that she hasn't had a single meltdown!(knock on wood) We have been having such a fun time today, that I couldn't help but pull out the camera and capture a few moments. Last night we had a great time with our friends the Welles family. Good food, lots of laughs, and the kids had a blast. The girls, Naomi and Annika needed some studio shots for an upcoming event, so we headed down to the studio for a quick 10 minute super-session. Historic Moment

I was overwhelmed this morning, sitting on the living room floor with my beautiful children- watching probably one of the most historic moments in my lifetime. Setting aside whether or not I am a die hard Democrat or if I am part of Obama-mania... today was truly moving. I will be sworn in as U.S Citizen on March 4th, and I am proud to be living in a country that believes in equality, celebrates diversity, and allows every child not only to dream, but believe.

I watched my children actually paying attention to the swearing in ceremony, and realized that one day, if Oliver OR Emma should really want to... they could be President as well.

Since I seriously think that we would freeze on impact upon stepping outside today, the kids and I put out imaginations to work to find some fun around the house. We made a treasure chest, and filled it with gold, made invitations to a pretend pirate party and "mailed" them, and needed to make an extra set of binoculars when there was a feud over the only pair. Such fun!!

Wow... Lisa and Todd are such a beautiful couple, and it was such a beautiful day! Other than the fact that is was FREEZING cold outside, everything seemed absolutely perfect, and totally magical. One of our dearest friends in Cambridge has the most amazing warehouse type workshop, which his business is based from. I love this "shop", my favorite thing being the fabulous doors that surround it. I have been meaning for quite some time to take some photos by these doors, and this weekend I took my children over to be my test models. Such fun!

Thanksgiving

I am thankful for so many things! Today, I am thankful that I am not more sick than I actually am. Although my voice is virtually non existent, and I am coughing up a lung or two... at least I am not sitting in a hospital bed.

Our Thanksgiving weekend was full of excitement! My sister, Becky, utterly and completely surprised us by arriving on our doorstep (compliments of our friend Bridget)to spend the weekend with us. I was in shock, and again, so grateful. The hardest thing about living on the East Coast is not having family near by. Becky was able to assist me on Friday's photo shoot with our dear friends, the Morton family. Such fun! I was also able to snap a few of Becky during her visit. And now I'm off to design Christmas cards from these shoots. Here's a sneak peek:

This morning I whisked my little Emma off to the studio to attempt taking a few shots. She is a tough nut to crack! I can probably count on one or two hands the number of photos I have with her big beautiful smile... Today was hardly an exception. In the few moments that I was able to entertain her with stories of her very favorite super hero - Buzz Lightyear, I barely penetrated her tough little 2 year old personality! I shamelessly tried to bribe her with lollipops, but her response was a firm "no way!" She then proceeded to fold her arms and gave me the biggest pout I have ever laid eyes on! Here's my proof:

Fun Times on White Street

This last week has been a busy one! We blasted off with our two little astronauts for Halloween, celebrated Emma's 2nd birthday, and have renewed Ollie and Emma's passion for brushing teeth with a trip to the dentist! We also took Christmas photos of the kids last night, and I cannot resist posting some of them. I have promised myself to be on top of Christmas cards this year, and am proud to say that they are ordered! I found a sliver of time between 8-10 pm last night, and seized the moment. I suppose I am feeling the Christmas spirit even earlier this year.

My family and I recently got home from a wonderful week visiting family in Utah. While we were there I was able to schedule in a few photo shoots including engagement photos for my sister in law, and her uber cool fiance. What fun! During the shoot and post production editing, I realized that there are two things that I LOVE. The first being a total necessity, but perhaps taken for granted is my Canon 580 speedlight for all the lovely off-camera fill flash needs. The second is my Wacom editing tablet. Such a cool device. I'm feeling the love people! I think I should take a step back more often to appreciate the overlooked in my camera bag -which is one more thing that I LOVE. I guess that makes 3 things now...

NEW SITE!!

I am so excited about the new look of amybrownstudios.com! It has been a lot of fun updating it (with Jeff's help of course.) I have a ton of photo shoots in the next couple of weeks, so please check back often, as I will be updating the website with more photos in the next days and weeks.
I am also excited about the proofing section on our site, which will allow upcoming clients to view the proofs from their shoot (with a password) directly from amybrownstudios.com. Much more direct than deciding from watermarked images on disc!
